...for tonight, is another night

I looked out longingly,
to the sea of city lights
shimmering in the rich darkness
in the stillness of the night.

there is a puerile thought,
of keeping the day at bay
and perhaps I'd live this moment awhile
if only I had it my way. 

and the sweeping change that time brings
from the dark, to the gray, to the lights within
the daybreak unfolded, the clouds hung low,
almost as if the mountains
cast a furrowed look below.

somewhere while i grieved
the loss of warmth of that night
a rainbow cast itself, soulful in the morning light
