Another day in paradise!

Imagine my surprise when I was handed over a personal invite from the Minister of Information Technology & Communications, Government of India, to join him for dinner last night. It’s a separate issue that another two hundred people must have received the same nonetheless it was special.

I must admit the charm of meeting the who’s who of the Telecom and IT industry has considerably worn off and I was joking around with the head of Alcatel, India without even realizing who he was. The dinner was an elaborate seven-course affair starting with some Tunisian wine (Magon) followed by octopus salad. This was followed by mushroom soup and then prawns in an exotic sauce and then ice cream with figs. I was told that the ice cream was to cleanse my taste buds before the main course was served. The main course was bacon in a pepper sauce with rice and vegetables in olive oil. The customary fruits were served next with pastries (lemon and fruit tarts and pistachio and chocolate pastries). Ah! the sin of pigging out...

Before the dinner we went to “Sidi Bou Said”, a French settlement with quaint little touristy shops. Sidi Bou Said overlooks the sea and is at an elevation, which allows a wonderful night view of the city of Tunis. It was a full moon night and slightly breezy. The lavish Abu Nawas Le Palace sits pretty amidst these hills where we went for dinner….

The minister was at his best, and i must admit that if there is a brand India being built then this is it. He is the brand new face of Indian polity.

P.S. I have been reading “To kill a mocking bird” while in Tunis….for the nth time, its very apt.
